How can I go into medical research - specifically involving technology such as nanomachines and nanobacteria.?

What should I major in? Medicine? Biology? Engineering?

I already have a bachelors in a non-science field.

If I go into medicine, do I have to volunteer in a health setting first, even though I don't really want to work in a clinical setting for a career?

How can I go into medical research - specifically involving technology such as nanomachines and nanobacteria.?
Re volunteering . Great ..Some techological institute may be able to help with your inguires and directions to see what

type of field you might be able to enjoy in your technological pursuit of nonomachine/ nonobacteria Med/Bio/ Engineering

Cutting off pinky toe for medical research and compensation?

I've heard that certain medical research companies offer to cut off your pinky toe and sew it back on for reasonable compensation. Is this just a silly rumor or is this true?

Cutting off pinky toe for medical research and compensation?
I have never heard this, but in this day and age, with a materialistic society and so many people who are completely irresponsible with money, we have come to a point where "anything" is for sale. So there is probably some shyster out there peddling this.
Reply:There are plenty of things that you can get payed for by the medical community as human testing. Hell, you can sell your sperm.

What colleges specialize in medical research?

i want to go to a college in the ny area that has a very good medical research department

What colleges specialize in medical research?
John Hopkins or Columbia
Reply:In order to be accredited every medical school must offer a research opportunity to medical students. The research done at any given medical school is not part of the school itself, but its either a part of the medical center that shares the name of the medical school or a contracted research center.

You won't find a lesser quality medical school anywhere in the US. If you have a particular interest, you need to research the research programs.

If a US medical student is going to do research, it is usually as a lab assistant during summer months. Some offer stipends, some do not. It's usually the professor who has the research grant that determines that factor.

An easy way to search what research is occuring is to go to the faculty web page. Most faculty will list their current research project under their credentials.
Reply:If you can expand your range, the number one hospital/medical school in the world is Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. They always rank very highly in the US News and World Report's "Best Hospitals" issue.

Should millions of animals euthanized each year instead be donated to medical research?

READ THIS-

I know the Humane Society, PETA, and other activist groups have been fighting research on animals, but considering the millions of strays that are euthanized each year, don't you think it would be better if they were donated for research? It would benefit both the animals and mankind. Also, consider this- If animal testing is stopped altogether, new medications will be tested on humans. Do you think it is better that human fatalities occur in this process, or several non-human animals die?

Should millions of animals euthanized each year instead be donated to medical research?
No, dogs and cats are NOT viable alternatives for testing because they do not have the physiology or immune responses that humans do.

I do, however; know also that animal testing cannot be halted at this point - your comment on testing on humans being why. I wonder if the PETA people would volunteer to test the drugs for the benefit of all mankind. I seriously doubt it.

Having said that, I am strongly for making sure that lab animals are humanely treated, and not subjected to arbitrary experiments just to see what would happen. Lab animals need to be treated better than in the past, and I think there should be oversight to ensure their humane treatment.

Edit: A computer simulation WILL NOT and CAN NOT take the place of testing on a living body. No matter how many computations it makes, there is always a variable that a computer cannot take into consideration - the life factor. No organism will react the same to a drug every time. One person will have one side effect, another person with the seemingly same physiology will have a completely different set of effects. A computer may MIMIC some of these, but it could never actually replace animal testing - unless the computer became sentient. And at that point, you'd have computer rights people protesting against using computers for anything, that they should be set free.

(Then think 'Terminator' and 'The Matrix').
Reply:I'm with you. PETA is too radical anyway. It is to me the same argument as with stem cells. Going to trash them anyway, then get some use out of them. When animal rights people learn how to treat people well, I'll talk with them.

I'm totally against cruelty to animals. Totally. But there is and should be a hierarchy of responsibility that animal rights people don't understand.
Reply:I don't know about you, but I'd rather be put to death than tortured the rest of my life.
Reply:NO A MILLION TIMES NO! those animals feel pain like we do.

They NOW have MODERN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY to simulate testing on how illnesses and disease would effect animals AND people with accuracy and it would be much cheaper as well. But testing on live subjects period IT IS ALL WRONG!!

There is SO MUCH of purpose that animals can do for us other then research like be trained as police dogs drug dogs, seeing eye dogs, gaurd dogs, nursing home animals ect.

Most people dont realize how theriputic it is for the elderly to feel the touch and recieve a loving touch from a animal. No! I do not agree.

1500 die daily of cancer, yet Bush cuts medical research funds based on idiotic Christian views?

Bush is a monster. I want no part of his God when he limits stem cell research and cuts funds for medical research. He was also recently criticized by surgeon generals for hurting their medical role.

1500 die daily of cancer, yet Bush cuts medical research funds based on idiotic Christian views?
Is it an idiotic view (Christian or otherwise) to direct funding to the research which is proving to be most effective? Research using adult stem cells has yielded dozens of treatments for diseases; embryonic stem cell research has yielded zero.

Your obvious hatred for GWB is clouding your thinking. Why the hate? Cancer isn't his fault, and he is promoting an effective branch of research.
Reply:I'm sure many people think your views are idiotic, but you still have them and want to see them adopted.
Reply:Why blame God or Christians for GW? I am a Christian and like many, even Nancy Regan (and I never thought I would agree with her on anything) I support Stem Cell Research.

Do not blame the Lord for the follies of men
Reply:I believe it is embryonic stem cell research that is the problem. The same cells can be harvested from other sources, without killing embryos.

Why not tell all of the story, rather that half truth?
Reply:The Christan stance is a cover, the real reason is to protect the pharmaceutical,Insurance, and private health care industries.

Its a FACT that treating a disease pays more than curing it.
Reply:Our President Bush wants a Christian conservative surgeon general.
Reply:Death will happen no matter what! Are you going to blame the President for DWI/DUI's as well?! LOL
Reply:EXCUSE ME, PRESIDENT BUSH ALLOWS STEM CELL RESEARCH. HE JUST DOES NOT ALLOW A BABY TO BE MADE IN A PETRE DISH THEN KILL IT FOR THE STEM CELL.

THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO GET STEM CELLS.

HE ALLOWS THE CORD FROM THE BABY AFTER IT IS BORN TO BE USED.. THERE IS PLENTY OF THEM AND THERE ARE OTHER WAYS...TO GET STEM CELLS WHICH HE ALLOWS...

HE JUST DOES NOT BELIEVE IN CREATING A BABY THEN KILLING IT FOR THE STEM CELL.

NOW WHO IS THE MONSTER???THE PERSON KILLING THE BABY OR THE ONE SAVING THE BABY?

THE SURGEON GENERALS BELIEVE IN A LOT OF WEIRD PRACTICES....REMEMBER JOYCELIN THE SURGEON GENERAL ON SEXUAL BEHAVIOR OF CHILDREN, ETC..??

DO A LITTLE RESEARCH AND YOU MAY BE VERY SURPRISED...IT IS A MORAL ISSUE, TOO.
Reply:Not all Christians are the same, you can't lump as all together. You are mainly thinking of Evangelicals.

How is medical research on cancer going?

I'm just wondering if all that money we give to research centers is actually doing some good. What are the latest breakthroughs on the disease?

How is medical research on cancer going?
Every penny ever spent on or donated to cancer research has been an excellent investment. I was diagnosed, treated %26amp; cured of cancer using the now somewhat unpopular "scientific" approach of surgery %26amp; chemo. If twice as much had been spent, that would not have been too much to gain me the wonderful %26amp; unexpected gift of a few more years!

I personally believe that anyone who sincerely thinks there is a "conspiracy" should be barred from conventional medicine if/when then are diagnosed with cancer, LOL!
Reply:Right now we know that cancer is caused by a malformation in DNA. Not only this but we are now learning that is caused by these "caps" on the end of DNA that allow the DNA to duplicate more rapidly when the genetic code is altered. Right now there is definite progress. It is hard to explain in terms you'd understand, but I believe that there will be cures for many types of cancer within the next 10 years. Another problem is getting all of this new type of research approved by the FDA.

There is amazing new nanobot technology where robots the size of Red Blood Cells go through your body and can be assigned to attack different areas of your body which would be helpful in eliminating cancer without radiation, if it is still localized. Anyways hopefully that was helpful keep reading up on it read about DNA and you will find it easier to understand than I can explain.

:) Nate
Reply:excellent question.

I am not much of a conspiracy theorist, but there would be an awful lot of jobs lost if there were a cancer cure.
Reply:Let's just say I am very happy and lucky that the researchers all over the world are tough and dedicated to finding a cure.
Reply:If cancer research was sincere, there is much they could be doing to further the development of cancer treatments.

The underying problem is that the most promising developments are are being shown from naturally occurring products which cannot be patented and therefore not controlled by the pharmaceutical companies. If they see no profit then they are not interested. Research centres are usually funded by the Big Pharmas so most potential remedies never recieve the study they deserve.
Reply:Probably the biggest breakthrough has been that HPV vaccination which prevents cervical cancer. However I don't think enough money is put into prevention of this dreadful disease. We seem to accept that most women are going to get breast cancer. We seem to accept that many men will get prostate cancer. My mother got breast cancer in the early 70's and although they've improved treatment methods they haven't improved not getting cancer.
Reply:the answer to this is the money donated is being wasted all the time, Humans are not the same as animals yet research is always done on animals which as well as being cruel is a complete waste of time, once they are satisfied with the animal tests then they move on to humans. a lot of useful remidies could be lost because of this.

also think about this. what would the scientists do if they found a cure? they would put themselves out of work do they want to do this?

Women: Do you think the gender gap in money devoted to medical research is a problem?

For many years, research for women's health issues has been under-funded. Do you think it's a problem and that research should be roughly equal?

Women: Do you think the gender gap in money devoted to medical research is a problem?
Funding by the government should be based upon the incidence, prevalence, and severity of the disease. However, we can not control what private industry does with their funds. Most studies have been done with a typical male as the research subject. I am glad that is changing.
Reply:Women's health research is certainly important but it is missing the point saying that the amount of funding should be equalised. It doesn't work that way. We have 2 sexes not 2 species.

It would be best that sex differences in health were recognised and given more priority in research. But like the professor said, the amount of funding should be weighted to the disease or condition by incidence and severity.
Reply:In fact, if any group is underfunded with research and awareness its men's health issues! We hear tons about breast cancer and ovarian cancer, but until the prostate cancer awareness, we heard little to none about cancers among men.

As for the notion of equality of funding. Frankly, money needs to go where it is most needed - and determined by the incidences and diagnoses. Healthcare should have no gender, and therefore, no discrimination.
Reply:What would make sense, instead of focusing on how much is spent on things that disproportionately effect arbitrary sub-groups of people, is to effectively spend money based on relevant aspects:

How deadly or harmful to quality of life a condition is;

how amenable it is to treatment (that is, how likely it is to become amendable to treatment) -- stuff like that.

When people say "spend more on men!" or "spend more on women!" they are just WRONG.
Reply:In what ways has it been underfunded? I thought the general consesnus was that women's health issues were overfunded compared to some men's issues? I do believe the amount of government contributions should roughly match the risks to the entire population, but what private companies do is up to them - I'm not sure the government could force them :-)
Reply:Well i do know why Breast Cancer gets 6 times the funding that Prostate Cancer does even when they have roughly the same kill and diagnosis rate.

And its not discrimination.

Breast Cancer has WAYY WAYYYY WAYY better representation and media air time than prostate cancer, and as such, private companies are more likely to donate to breast cancer.

What are some great science (biology, chemistry, etc.) and medical research opportunities for high schoolers?

I'm really interested in science (chemistry, biology, etc.) and medicine but I'm in high school. I want to go to pre-med or something like that and I'd really like to get involved in some sort of research opportunity or something, maybe in a lab or a professor. I live in Ann Arbor, MI and the U of Michigan is a great school for things like this, but somehow I cannot seem to find anything anywhere no matter how much I look. Any suggestions?

What are some great science (biology, chemistry, etc.) and medical research opportunities for high schoolers?
I'm sure I saw a summer program for high schoolers at a med school. Keep looking.

Edit: I found a site that lists them.

How can I get a summer job in medical research?

I'm a university student.

I'd like to work in a doctor's office of on a research project.

Do you work in a hospital?

Do you work in the research field?

I'd appreciate any insights you have.

How can I get a summer job in medical research?
Have a degree in biology, or at minimum, a strong statistics and research background. They don't just throw you a research project without knowing if you know anything about statistics, proper research methods, etc. You have to prove that you are worthy to be conducting research. If you degree is physical education then it's useless, however, with an undergrad bio, physics, psychology, etc degree you have a better shot. A strong science background will only help you.

What should I study in college in order to do medical research as a career?

I am really interested in Neurology and doing research in that field but the school I'm going to now doesn't have a neuroscience program. My major is currently Chemistry. Will that give me enough background to get into a good Neuroscience graduate program?

What should I study in college in order to do medical research as a career?
chem is good, but is there a pre med program? or nursing?
Reply:that or chemistry/biology double major.

i think eugene, oregon has a really good neuroscience program.
Reply:You will need to go to medical school to become a neurologist. No specific major is required, but several courses are required. As a chemisry major, you will hav taken most of them. SUpplement your chemistry courses with biology classes and other required premed classes.
Reply:A chemistry degree is a fine place to start. The next big question is whether to take a Ph.D. track via, say, biochemistry, or an M.D. track, or combine the two. It might be worth arranging a safari to a nearby medical school to pick brains.
Reply:either that or biology.

The use of aminals in medical research?

I am diong a presentation in my Medical Ethics class about animals used in biomedical research. Any suggesitons on additional topics? What I have so far:

I. Intro (ways porople use animals - medical %26amp; non medical)

II. Pro's of using animals in medical research

III. Opinion of Animal Rights Activists

IV. Public Opinion

V. Types of animals used

VI. Medical Advancements made possible by animal research

VII. Ethical guidelines of animal use

VIII. Animal Welfare Act

I also need a bit of help with the comclusion. My positon is that the sue of animals in biomedical research is a very valuable tool, but that ethical guidelines should be adhered to and every precaution should be taken to reduce invasiveness and pain, and to ensure that there are no other alternative models.

The use of aminals in medical research?
While in college I worked as an animal caretaker in the psych research lab at ___ University. I have never had a problem with research of this nature as long as it is beneficial. What I used to think was bad was that many of the experiments were performed over and over for years on lots of different animals for the purpose of teaching psychologists how to do research of this nature. I didn't understand that even though they knew what the results would be that it was important to teach future researchers how to perform this type of work.

So the topic could be related to the area of teaching HOW to do the research using live animals. Is there an alternative?
Reply:The reasons why they use animals for research and this is because animals are so closely related to humans.

What type of education should I pursue to get into the medical research field?

I am currenty in high school, and plan on entering the medical field. Although I have considered becoming a doctor, surgeon, etc., these choices seem too "boring". I would rather be working to find new cures for cancer, AIDS, or other types of medical disorders and working to advance medical science.

I'm not sure what type of degree I should pursue in college, and what path of study I should pursue in medical school. Any suggestions would be great.

What type of education should I pursue to get into the medical research field?
You could follow the requirements for pre-med, but they are rather loose -- most Med Schools only require one year each of calculus, chemistry, organic chemistry, biology and physics. That is enough to start the study of medicine, but it is not enough to get a good job in research. After you get out of med school if you want to do mostly research there are lots of hospitals and research institutions that you could work at.

If you don't want to do Med School then you need to major in physics, chemistry or biology. And then you need to start right in on your MS degree, because if you only have a BS you will be the lab flunkey, not a real researcher. If you get a MS then you will be half a flunkey and half a researcher, at least for a few years until you get some experience. Then if you are really good, you will maybe be considered a legitimate researcher. If you want to be in charge of the research and make a good living and manage the lab, then you need a PhD.

So plan on a long, long time in school, lots of debts when you get out. Hopefully you will get a job in research.

One area you may not have considered is pharmacy. It used to be easy to get into pharmacy school but not any more. Now, because there are so many interesting research jobs, getting into pharmacy school is as hard as getting into med school. In general, you need to take about the same courses that you need for med school, only in med school they expect you to spend four years as an undergrad before you start, but in pharmacy school you usually spend only two years as an undergrad... so you have to take the chem, organic chem and physics right away starting in your freshman year.
Reply:Iff you enroll as a pre-med student, you willl take all of the appropriate prerequisite courses, and as you proceed and join clubs of interest and take more specific classes you will detelrmine the direction in which you woud like to go.ake sure the University offers a good pre-med, with many options, and if you transfer credits from one major to another withoug losing credits.

My dughtr has the same dilemma. She wanted to be a vet,but isafrai since UF is extremely difiicult to get into vet school, and even though she holds a 4.0, that she may not gget in. The classes getmore difficult with each semester. however, she is going to continue on the track of pre-med because in the end there are so many directions to go toward. Al of the fields in medicine are goingt o require numerous science classes, so you can't go wrong.

Should extracted fetuses be used for medical research?

Instead of aborting a fetus, they could be extracted "alive" and used to further medical research. I don't see anythin unethical or immoral in this at all, because they were essientially going to be "terminated" and likely either tossed into medical waste or used for limited medical research. A "living" fetus could be used for much more medical research to help find cures to diseases and even used to harvest use able organs.

Should extracted fetuses be used for medical research?
i think they should. why not? just disposing of them is wasteful.
Reply:Im sorry but that truly sounds horrible. I think that science goes too far and oversteps the boundaries! Ethics and morals are forgetten and disregarded. I care about all human beings, and the thought of using a live fetus that can not speak up, is just grusome and inhumane.
Reply:They shouldn't be used as guinea pigs or aborted. They are living humans.
Reply:That is a demented way of thinking!!!
Reply:That would be called birth, and no. You are talking about researching on human beings that have no way of consenting.
Reply:i think we should also experiment on unwanted children

adoption is rarely a success and they often turn to crime

this way they could contribute to society
Reply:Of course. But, for a better tomorrow-

Should we do medical research on Peta members rather than animals?

Peta is into protecting animal rights and in my view, value animals more than human beings. I suggest we do medical research on their members rather than animals because, we wouldnt want to hurt the animals now, would we?

Should we do medical research on Peta members rather than animals?
No: two extremist points of view do not add up to a moderate one. I'm sure there is a middle ground. Extensive, unecessary, tortuous medical research doesn't advance medical science. Humans and animals are different. And much of the work being done is barbaric and outdated. The methods don't yield results. PETA members feel the need to point out the wrongs being done and they need to feel they are doing something about it. And medical research needs to be done, but not necessarily on animals or people. There are other more advanced methods. It makes more sense to test a new drug on a subject for whom it is intended...a sick human, rather than on an animal...a different species...who has been purposely infected with a human disease.
Reply:Drug companies have an seemingly infinite source of funding. Wouldn't it be more ethical for the drug companies to *pay* volunteers to participate in studies rather than to force an animal to be the guinea pig? It is not like animals can rationalize that what you are doing to them is for the good of society.
Reply:LOL! Not a bad idea, but first you must consider who the research would be done on. Do you really want results of medical tests based on Pamela Anderson???
Reply:I agree.

PETA sends me all kind of crap to get me to donate.

I can't imagine sending money to help animals %26amp; plants when there's so many charities that help people out there.
Reply:Pamela Anderson is a twit. Doesn't she care that silicone is becoming extinct because of her?
Reply:Great idea! I've always felt there must be a better use for PETA members than just consuming and spewing back garbage.
Reply:they would probably volunteer if you said it was either them or the animals, then everyone would be happy.
Reply:Why not? Use prisoners.

I joined Peta... People Eating tasty Animals.
Reply:yes. Would it be better to use unsuspecting humans like test subjects or the buying population as a whole to find out that some strange reactions happens if "fill in the blank" is gotten in the eyes... etc etc

How MEDICAL RESEARCH is linked to MEDICINE?!?

How is medical research linked to actual medicine and why is it important?

How MEDICAL RESEARCH is linked to MEDICINE?!?
In order for doctors %26amp; scientists to invent and come up with new and working medicines, they need medical research to help them know what properties %26amp; uses their newly founded medicines have and what they can do.

You need knowledge to invent. You need a brain to think with. You need research to become educated. You need medical research before inventing medicines.

Hope this helped!
Reply:It is the basic science that leads to discoveries, changes in the way we think about things. All those esoteric sounding articles are adding to out knowledge of how things work, how they can be changed. Without the basic science, no progress.
Reply:Without research involving medications, and new surgical techniques, there would be no base for physicians to use as a reference point.

The FDA must approve medications which then, become available to physicians to prescribe for their patients to alleviate, control or cure particular illnesses or disorders.

With new surgical techniques, research must be conducted to determine the safest methods to be used before the initial operation (on a human) becomes the standard by which the physicians are enabled to perform the surgery with the least risk to the patient.

Is there a way that medical science can stop/reverse menopause? Why is there no research to stop menoause?

Is it because the medical research community is dominated by men? I have read that there is sexism when it comes to research because more research is given to men's health issues as opposed to women's health issues. Actually it's seems pretty obvious to me because you would think in this day in age, menopause can be stopped.

Is there a way that medical science can stop/reverse menopause? Why is there no research to stop menoause?
Menopause is a natural process which should not be stopped. Beside, I don't see how you could stop it without awful side-effects. After a certain age, there is no need for menstruation, and childbirth becomes very dangerous for both mother and child. Believe it or not, the sole purpose of menstruation is so women can have children.
Reply:Menopause should not stop. It's a natural process. If women try to stop their bodies from going through menopause, bad things can happen.

Women need to just get over it and go through it. It happens. I hate that people are wanting science to stop natural occurances. Ugh.

Where can I find medical research reports in German that have not been translated into English?

It's for a university translation project. I've looked on the internet but the few pieces of research I've found have already been translated into English. It can be on any area of medical research and must be technical and at least 2000 words long. Does anyone have any ideas please? Thank you!

Where can I find medical research reports in German that have not been translated into English?
Translate them back to german

Versuche

Medizinische Ergebnisse

Medizinische Forschungsergebnisse

Forschung Medizin Bericht

I just did a serch in pubmed by doing a search for german...see if any of these articles can help you....it may only give the abstract..but you can then take the reference and ask your librarian to get the orginal article for you... usually there is a $5 fee, unless the journal is already in the library..
Reply:Try a periodical search like MedLine or EBSCOHost or something like that. Your local library should have something like that... Also you may want to try the Local State College library.
Reply:rEesearch translates as VERSUCHE ODER EXPERIMENTELLE FORSCHUNG. Look under those titles
Reply:Try to lend it from students in German Medical Universities...

Why is a sexual reproduction important for a medical research?

how could it help or why is it so important for medical or biological researches?

Why is a sexual reproduction important for a medical research?
Most of the experiments they do requires living organisms, and they cannot mafacture that. If they increase the sexual reproduction, they get more products and better results, with a higher amount of diversity.
Reply:In genetic experiments using mouse models or rat models, you have to introduce the mutated gene of interest into the organism. To do that, you do what is called cell transformation. In essence, you insert your gene of choice into an embryonic stem cell (or rather, a whole batch of them). It's as simple as putting the two together in a solution and then shocking the cell with electricity.

Once you've got a transformed cell expressing your gene of choice, you then insert it into a blastocyst. Implant that into a rat or mouse, then let it grow into a mice pups.

Of course, these new mice or rats won't express the gene fully. Why? Well, when you insert your transformed embryonic stem cells into the blastocyst, you need a few stem cells inside to begin with to make up the numbers. So your mouse will only express half of the desired genes if lucky.

You then cross-breed and select for the ones that fully express the genes in all cells.

Help with finding examples of the important role animals hold in medical research?

Well I know horseshoe crabs' blood is used for blood transfusions.

Also many venomous animals(snakes, jellyfish, poiso n dart frogs, etc.) are useful in making medications and anti venoms.
Reply:"Animal research has played a vital role in virtually every major medical advance of the last century – for both human and animal health. How is the financial management of medical researches in medical research centers?

how much money do medical centers give to their projects?(parameteres) %26amp; when do they send the first percent of it? on which stage of research they pay all of the money?

How is the financial management of medical researches in medical research centers?
Most research is run by national or international grant, either from the government or from charities-and more recently, from drug companies. Government grants are paid out, usually, quarterly-that is, every three months. Charities usually give money yearly, or occasionally give the entire amount at once. Drug companies can grant the money all at once, or if it is in collaboration, will give money based upon productivity. Regardless, usually the financial department of the medical centre or university will act as if all the money has been disbursed, and allow the researcher to spend regardless of quarterly or yearly payments made by the granting agency.

Hope that helps

Does anyone know how I can involved in being a paid volunteer for medical research in Central/Metro Minnesota?

My friend gets paid very well for volunteering for medical research studies. BUT how do you find them? She lives too far away for me to drive where she goes to.

I have a strong interest in medical or health realted/public health research. How does one go about it?

I am highly interested in medical research. How does one go about it.What are the prerequisite skills needed? How should i apply to be a reseach assistant at university i am going to attend?I am an international student with a degree in medicine?Any tips and pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Well, first you need to be willing to work for nothing so you can gain some experience. Labs and research groups will gladly give work to people who will do it for free. Then if you're good, they'll hire you based on experience for pay.

Look beyond your university. All students zero in on the university first, so research positions can be difficult to find. Go to a research hospital instead (like a cancer center or AIDS hospital) and look for volunteer positions and internships. Or you can find a non-profit organization to take you. Go for the big names, but understand non-profits seldom pay money. And if they pay, it's a paltry sum.

Or try your local heatlh department. They do plenty of research projects, and they love slave labor. That's how I did my master's thesis.

Dress up your resume to make yourself look good and be proactive. Research the projects your profs are doing. Pick a few projects that sound interesting to you. For example, if you are interested in infectious disease research, you might wanna focus less on tobacco prevention research. Then seek the professors and visit them in person. Talk to them about the projects and see whether there's a place in the lab for you.
Reply:Go to a hospital in the city you live in. Tell them you have a degree in medicine and ask them how you can go into research.good luck.

Help needed to calculate volume for some medical research?

I need to apply Boyles law for some medical research and would appreciate if you can confirm my calculations. I have a sphere of volume 306.44 micro liters, at one atmospheric pressure (1 ATA). I now apply a pressure of 2.8 ATA externally onto this sphere. Applying Boyles law, I calculate that this sphere will become smaller by 197 micro liters and become 109.44 micro liters in volume. My maths is rusty , so confirmation of these calculations will be much appreciated.

Help needed to calculate volume for some medical research?
P(1)V(1) = P(2)V(2)

This, of course, assumes that the external pressure before compression was 1.00 atm. Otherwise, the math looks good.
Reply:The math looks good, but the science may be wrong. First, how do you expect to change the volume of a sphere? Secondly, your calc is OK if the process is ultimatly isothermal, a condition you don't state.

What are some areas in medical research you find frivolous or unethical?

Are there any areas of medical research you think are frivolous? Things you think are unethical, and shouldn't be pursued anymore? (Besides vanity-driven plastic surgery! ;))

Cloning is starting to get real close to the line, but that won't stop them. I hate to think what the world will be like in another 100 years.

What countries lead the world in medical research?

?

Also, what universities lead the US in medical research?

What countries lead the world in medical research?
I suggest you go to USA and United Kingdom. University of Bristol in United Kingdom is the best as my experience in medical research in UK. However, you can make a reference to Cuba as it is also good at medical research and cheap for cost.

What the difference between medical research schools and primary care?

I'm currentely a sophorome in HS and I aspire to become a pediatritian, but when I look for the best medical schools there is research medical schools and primary care.

* And can you please tell me what I should be doing in HS to have a good record for medical schools? And what major pediatritian would be on? Thanks!

What the difference between medical research schools and primary care?
Research is lab and theoretical work. Developing vaccines, etc.

Primary care work it clinical practise, treating patients.

Some schools are rated better for research like Harvard, some better for clinical like UCSF or Stanford.

In clinical practise you still have to do research work, just not as much. More than half your work is clincial and the rest research.

In research one would imagine it's just the opposite.

Pediatrican is 4 years extra schooling after you finsihed medical school and internship. So it's a 12-13 year invesntment in college time.

You need to take lab biology, chemistry, math through trig, statistics if it is offered.

If you're going to a private universith 2 years foreign language is usually required.

Why placebo is given in a medical research study for a new medicine?

Could you tell me the reason for giving placebo in a medical research study for a new medicine, which looks and tastes like the actual medicine. When the researchers know, it will not cure the disease, why this is given to patients?

Why placebo is given in a medical research study for a new medicine?
The reason for giving placebos is that many people will feel better after they take a pill even if that pill doesn't have any biological effect. If a researcher is testing a pain pill and finds out that 20% of people taking the pain pill feel better, but 20% of the people taking the placebo also feel better, the new pain pill probably isn't effective. But if 20% of the people taking the placebo feel better and 80% of the people taking the pain pill feel better than the placebo is probably helping a lot of them.

In come research it would be unethical to use a placebo. For instance, if people have diabetes or high blood pressure, it would risk their health to stop their regular medications and give them only a placebo. In those cases, one group is treated with the test medication and one group is treated with "standard care." If people do as well or better on the test medication as standard care, then it's considered effective.
Reply:BY GIVING PLACEBO`S TO PATIENTS, WHO DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE GETTING, ONLY THE RESEARCHERS DO, IT HAS BEEN PROVEN MANY TIMES OVER THAT THE PATIENT BELIEVES HE IS GETTING THE REAL DRUG, AND JUST BY BELIEVING IT,( POSITIVE ATTITUDE) THE PATIENT FULLY RECOVERS. AND WHILE AT THE SAME TIME PATIENTS RECEIVING THE REAL DRUG, BELIEVE THEY ARE GETTING THE PLACEBO, AND BECAUSE OF THE NEGATIVE ATTITUDE, THEY DO NOT RECOVER.
Reply:because so much of what medication does for us in our heads, the patient doesn't know what they get but the researchers know who got the new drug and who got the placebo, and they can see what side effects are caused be the drug instead of the patients imagination, and how well it performs compared to patients who think they took it.
Reply:Because of the placibo effect. If I dress as a doctor and give a group of people a sugar pill when the complain of a problem, a certain number of them will get well without any other treatment. This may be due to mind over matter, the body's natural defenses, the illness playing out over time or other factors.

If I then give some people medicine that I hope will cure the problem, it it performs better than the placebo effect, then it has promise. If it performs the same or worse then it is a useless (and maybe expensive) item.

The effect is the reason that anecdotal reports of "cures" are useless until tested. If a hundred people hear of a cure and try it and due to placebo effect results in 20 people getting well, who are you going to hear from: the 20 or the 80 who got no help? And when you hear 20 reports of success, how do you have any idea that there were 80 for whom it failed.

The placebo effect is so strong that double blind studies are even more valid - a doctor giving out a pill known to the doctor to be a sugar pill will get poorer results, presumably because of subtle clues given the patient and interpretation of reports, than a doctor who doesn't know which patients are getting the sugar pill and which the medicine.
Reply:THen they can tell if the real medicine works and not just your mind fighting the disease.
Reply:placebo is actual water every body knows this this was in the news paper here in dallas texas back in 2001 this is old news
Reply:this is so that the researchers can give the patients (some) the real medicine and others the placebo to see what they will act like, if there are any results, or is it has no effect at all.

The placebo people are the control group and the real medicine are the people being studied.
Reply:When doing research one needs to know if the real thing works. One way is to make the placebo look and taste the same but see if there are different reactions between the two. Hopefully, the real medicine will have a more dramatic improvement, in which case they can apply to the FDA for approval. As the placebo is mostly a sugar pill, there should be no improvement pharmacologically, but can be psychologically.
Reply:The reason for this is to assess the body's natural ability to cure it's own ailment. Placebos can have the same effect on the human body as the medication in some cases. If the placebo performs as well as the medication, then the researchers know that they must reformulate it.
Reply:It's test for the actual medicine. The medicine might only work as often as the placebo or it might work so many times more often than the placebo. It;'s strange to think of it but the human mind is capable of great miracles as long as it believes it can happen.

The mind has a great power to heal.

Good luck
Reply:Giving a placebo is the only way to determine the effectiveness of the actual medication being tested.

People who participate in these studies know that they may receive the placebo and may not be helped.
Reply:The reason for using a placebo control is that the benefits from taking medications are not always due to the drug itself. These benefits are called “placebo effects.” An example is when an investigator’s enthusiasm about a new medication sometimes influences the patient’s response.

A researcher must be able to separate placebo effects from the actual effects of the drug being studied. When equal numbers of patients receive either a placebo or another standard drug that will help treat their symptoms, the researcher can better judge the actual effects of the drug being tested.

Is it acceptable in medical research to use anecdotes as a reasons to start a study?

I am well aware that in research anecdotes are not acceptable as supportive or conclusive evidence and scientific reasoning. But my question is, would it be scientifically acceptable to warrant a study on a drug simply because of rumors of a substance having some sort of medical benifit and then conduct the study to test the anecdotes? Or are drug studies only granted permission by the FDA only if the study is being done to test previous scientific theories of how it would medically benefit.

Is it acceptable in medical research to use anecdotes as a reasons to start a study?
i think yes, but my opinion is that of a layman

How do I find medical research studies that are paying subjects to participate?

I keep hearing about these people at school who make some extra money on the side by participating in medical research studies but I cant figure out where to find them to sign up! Any ideas?

How do I find medical research studies that are paying subjects to participate?
Depends on where you live. For instance if you live here in Pennsylvania, you can look on google for Penn State research participant. So just look for a teaching institution in your area, which here is Penn State's Milton Hershey Medical Center.

Medical Research?

Is medical research a good thing or a bad thing? Support your answer with facts!!

Medical Research?
Medical research, for the most part, is a marvelous advance that improves life and the quality of life. It has led to the development of insulin, antibiotics, heart transplants, and cancer cures for some leukemias. Of course there are some bad possibilities when the research is meant for evil purposes, such as killing others by means of chemical or germ warfare. Overall, we want to progress into a better future with beneficial medical research.
Reply:Of course it's good. No research equals no advances. I've had an artificial aortic valve for 34 years now. Without the advances in heart health I would have died probably 34 years ago.
