I need to persuade the committee that I need an MD and a PhD
Why is a medical degree necessary to achieve your research goals? Why do choose MD/PhD program?
If you are entirely interested in doing bench research, a Ph.D. is sufficient. If you are more interested in translational research where medicine and research work closely together, a MD/Ph.D. is the better option. For studies where human subjects are involved, the MD/Ph.D. is able to get faster approval because they are able to treat patients in the clinic.
I am finishing my Ph.D. right now in Molecular Biology and Genetics. For me, I do not want to be married to my job and from all of the MD/Ph.D.'s that I have met, they work at least 16 hrs a day (Even when settled into the career). They try to balance the clinic with the research and other responsibilities between - It is HIGHLY demanding.
Reply:basically, you need the MD to treat patients. but you need the PhD to do research to further help the people. like you want to research a new drug and treat the people in the clinical trials.
