What is the relevance and importance of 'inclusion/exclusion criteria' in a research? What is this concept?

Does 'inclusion/exclusion criteria' can be used only in medical research or psychology research ? What's its scope in social science and in management research?


Fink A, in her book 'how to sample in research' mentions this concept, but its for those who are doing research in medical field. How can a management researcher quote this concept and give justification for the use of this concept?
