No. A PhD is sufficient, and often preferable to an MD, since MDs do not get trained in how to do research any more than PhDs get trained in medicine. However, you will not be able to conduct clinical trials without an MD.
Does a person have to have degree in medicine to do research in the medical field?
No - there are tons of people with degrees in biology, chemistry, bioengineering, pharmacy etc who do that kind of work.

However, if one wishes to write about the research found, they must have access to reliable medical information and sources as well as be able to show certification in the area of research. (Which means, if you want to write a paper for a medical magazine or book, you do need a degree to show your credibility.)
