Can medical doctors (M.D) do research?

Hey all,

I was just wondering if medical doctors are involved in medical research, or is it just doctors with a PhD? I plan on going to medical school but would also want to pursue research work in virology, so I was just wondering would i need to go for an M.D./PhD. or could I still do research at say a university with just an M.D?

Hope someone has an answer : )

thanks

Can medical doctors (M.D) do research?
Of course, lots of M.D.s and D.M.D.s and D.D.S.s do research without the PhD, but you would want to spend some time and effort studying your specialty. That time could be put to good use by acquiring additional degrees in virology. Some institutions have a combined M.D./ PhD. program.Contact several universities to find them.
Reply:A medical doctor (MD) can do medical research but most of his or her training is clinical--dealing with pathology of patients. A PhDD. D. is more oriented to statistical research design. You can get a combined M.D./Ph. D. but it is a very long program. Most Md's love dealing with people and may get tired of the research. Psychologists are Ph.D's and help people with emotional problems. There is a new degree, Psy.D. which is a counseling degree. Don't limit yourself to just medicine.

A great field now is bio-statistics (PhDD) that deals with numbers and how disease develops in populations. There is always public health degrees, D.Ph. dealing with epidemiology (disease upon populations). Get a clear of what you want to do by writing your top 10 goals then rate them as to importance. Writing things down is a "must".
Reply:Sure, MD's may want to try a certain regimen for a certain disorder and they keep track of their patients and success/failure.
Reply:Yes,

MDs, PHDs and ODs as well, All do researh.
Reply:All sorts of people are involved in research, from bachelor degree holding lab assistants to PhD experimental design professionals. It would really depend on what aspect of research you are interested in.
Reply:Most kind of Dr.'s can do research. If you are a Ph.d. in Philosophy and work at a University, you are expected to do research. Yes, MD's regularly do research, if that is the path they have chosen.
Reply:MDs can do research all the same.
